A post-punk platter of psychedelic melancholy. Young Criminals' Starvation League flirts with Beatles-like harmonies, a fascination with early 70's classic country, and some gen-u-ine Nashville soul, but also delivers a quick sucker punch to the past through literate, biting songwriting. Why is he so sad and angry? Well, look around--rock and roll has become a Jurassic Park ($200 tickets to see Paul McCartney??? ANOTHER Eagles reunion??) and country, the music his renowned father crafted so well, has all the zest of cold soup. It's enough to make you unplug your guitar, pick up a pen and pound a few nails into the Coffin de Rock. What emerges is a smarter, softer, but somehow still menacing Bobby Bare, Jr. It's poignant, it's expressive, it can be funny (the best humor is born of pain, remember), and it can be mournful. The backing talents of folks like Paul Burch, Paul Niehaus, and a smooth horn section give it a vibe that gets under your skin and will have you howling at the moon. Some of these songs and melodies bore into your brain like a diamond scalpel. The amps might not be as loud, but that's so you can hear the words. We LOVE this record and we want people to hear it. Maybe our descriptions are making you scratch your head or are scaring you off. Forgive us, this CD is ahead of its time and we are not sure what to say about it. All the years we all wasted getting English degrees are powerless in coming up with suitable words to describe this project. When someone around the office is absent-mindedly whistling a tune, chances are real good that it is "I'll Be Around"--the catchiest song we've ever released and simple proof that commercial radio doesn't know a genre-bending smash hit if it ran up and bit it in the ass, and, if radio programmers weren't all neutered corporate lapdogs, it should be in the canon of universally loved songs as well |
