Root Strata was founded in San Francisco in 2005 by Jefre Cantu-Ledesma as an avenue to release his solo music as well as music by Tarentel, The Alps, and other recordings by friends. The label quickly grew to encompass a broader range of musicians mainly from the American west coast including Grouper, Yellow Swans, Starving Weirdos, Barn Owl, Valet, Ilyas Ahmed & Gregg Kowalsky. In recent years the label has broadened is focus to include musicians from all around the world, including Richard Youngs, Christina Carter, Islaja, Duane Pitre and Zelienople. In The fall of 2009 the label started the annual On Land Festival in San Francisco, focusing mainly on Root Strata artists. The label is also planing the release of its first book/DVD (‘Divide’ by Liz Harris/Grouper) later this year.
